Description

Santa Ana Cathedral, located in the Vegueta district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Canary Islands. Its construction began around 1500, shortly after the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella completed the conquest of Gran Canaria. The project was initiated under Bishop Diego de Muros, though it took centuries to complete, resulting in a blend of architectural styles that reflect the various periods of its development.

The cathedral’s initial design followed the Gothic tradition, which is visible in the vaulted ceilings and tall columns inside the building. However, as construction progressed over time, Renaissance and Neoclassical elements were incorporated, particularly in the facade and some interior features. The dual-towered exterior of the cathedral is especially striking and serves as a defining feature of the surrounding skyline.
